Long Lunch at Jeffery's

Acrylic and Polymer on Linen

800mm x 1930mm

Price: $4800.00

Jeffrey Smart was a major influence in my decision to take up a professional career. This composition was composed after a beautiful lunch with him at his longtime home near Arrezzo in Tuscany in July 2012, less than a year before he died. The artist was ailing and relied on a breathing apparatus yet he still had that renowned sparkle in his eyes. On the return drive on the ancient Roman road to Montefiascone, we passed fields of sunflowers, breathtakingly beautiful in the dusk. Beyond the imagery of the landscape, lies my sense of isolation and psychological turmoil associated with my problems of addiction and the apparent divide between myself and the rest of humanity. On the surface this is a very happy colourful composition but with a dark undertone represented by the large scar running the diagonal, bottom left of the canvas.
